Learning English in my country.

        My country is Vietnam, if you don’t know where Vietnam is, you can google it easily.

        I have been learning English for a long time, when I was in high school. But as almost English student in Vietnam, I cannot communication in English before I come here. Through many years I had learnt English, I’ve just learnt only one skill is grammar.

        English class in Vietnam is traditional class. We used text books written by Vietnamese teachers and in my opinion, they are not interesting. They just focus to grammar and almost there are no pronunciation practices, or just a little. All exams in high school is grammar, so teachers and students should focus to grammar. We don’t communicate in class as well as discussion. This is the reason why in Vietnam, students know so much about “tense, passive form, modal verb…”, but they can’t speak a whole sentence and can’t also communicate with foreigner.

        The better way to learn all 4 skills in English is go to a English center, but It’s certainly not cheap. Teachers come from everywhere over the world. Today I maybe learn American accent, but tomorrow, maybe is Singapore accent or India accent. We don’t have environment to speak English except we are in large city.

        Nowadays, there are so many English lessons available online. This is very convenient for Vietnamese students want to learn English. They can listen English online and practice pronunciation. With many Vietnamese students who are live in small town, speaking English fluently is almost impossible.

Take A Picture

I like take a photo. a few years ago, I was not interested to take photo. After Military Service, I should adjust in my university. So I start to go to club which is Architecture black and white film photograph club. of course it is related my major. Our group have an exhibition each a half year. If I submit a picture, I can be a regular member. Actually I'm not good at taking picture. So I need to a lot of films. I expend much money on films. My university is near my hometown. but I don't know well. My University is in Busan. I don't know why did they build house in mountain. anyway I usually go mountain. By the way more and more I took a picture, I fall in love with pictures. I didn't noticed. but my friends knew that. So. my friend was like "You always talk about picture and your club." I agree that I like take picture. So I was a leader in my club and I have three camera including DSLR, SLR. When I came to Riverside. I couldn't bring them. because my parents wanted to concentrate to study English. I guess it make me bored. If I bring my baby, I have not enough time to feel bored.

A Memorable Trip I Had

Since I came to USA, I have been traveling many cities nearby California. I have been LA, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, and San Diego. All of them were very nice and unforgettable, but LA trip is the most memorable. I went for a trip to LA as soon as I came to USA, so it is meaningful.
I went LA with my friends, and we had a trip for 4 days. It was hard and tiring trip, because before trip, we had taken airplane for 11 hours. However, it was also interesting. Therefore, I couldn’t forget it.
In LA, we stayed at Hollywood hostel which is located in Hollywood boulevard. It was convenient to look around Hollywood and go to LA’s major tourist attraction, because there is a metro nearby the hostel. Also, its charge was cheap for student.
First day, we just looked around near the hostel. There was Hollywood boulevard, and we could see walk of fame and star mark. That night, there was a party, because that day was end day of year (Dec.31). However, I was so tired, and I missed my first party in USA. Second day, we went Universal Studios. Universal Studios was one of the best places in my trip. There are so many amusing entertainment centers, for example, Simpsons, Terminator 3D, Water World, and Shrek. Many of the stores look like pictures of movie. For weather was so good, it was more joyful.
However, next day, it rained. We went to Farmer’s Market, The Grove, and Getty Museum. There were many things which I like, and that day, we ate Korean food for dinner. Last day, we went to Union Station, China town, and Korea town. Korea town which is well known to Korean in LA is very big. In Korea town, we ate expensive steak. It was so good.
In LA, I was very interested, because LA trip was the first trip in USA. Everything which was like a food, building, or transportation was amazing to me. However, we had to look around all for 4 days, so we had lots of plan per one day. Because of that reason, we were so busy and very tired. Every 4 days, we fell asleep quickly as soon as we came back to hostel after trip. My travel in LA made me not only happy but also tired. So it is more memorable to me. I usually see my picture in LA, and I miss LA trip.

Experiences in US.

Before you turn around,I will have my tenth week in UCR.In the past nine weeks,I learned a lot both in studies and in lives.

The first thing I would like to say is study;it is also the most important aim to come to UCR.Unfortunately I ruined my winter vacation which leads to my fail in the level exam,but I did not disappoint,improving English is my goal.The biggest improve after I came here is my speaking English.There was a time I cannot say a whole sentence,but now I can speak more fluently.My classmates in China are all very concern about me;they encouraged me and told me the news of my University which helped me focus on my study.

The next point I would like to talk about is the local people.You cannot imagine that people here are so friendly.We were wondering why all cars waiting for us to cross the road when the first time on the street;our home stay are so kind that we have a feel like it is our home.Now I live in the apartment,my roommates are all American and they are very nice.People in China do not talk too much to strangers in public.I think that is not because Chinese are not like strangers,it is because China has so many people in the street and at everywhere,so if we talk to everyone,we cannot handle it.In US it is really hard to see many people walking on the street,for they all have their own cars!So these days in here make me want to care about more other people,and to see what they are doing and join them together.

Since I have not been contacted with many American,the experiences that influence me most are our classmates from China and also my new classmates.I used to think that science is the most important subject,such a limited idea.Yes, I always stayed with people in this group,I was in a science class in high school,and now I majoring in engineering in a Technological University,I played with people like me.These days in UCR extension I stayed with my old classmates majored in business,English,movie make,accounting and so on.We discuss in class,we sometimes have a different point of view,which the thought startle me,and make me experience the feeling that I never felt before.I enjoyed the moments that we have fun together.I changed my view.Also,I found my new class’s classmates are so nice,and I am happy to have classes with you guys.So now I like the colorful view of the world.This remembered me some sentences in the movie “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”:‘Some people are born to sit by a river,some get struck by lightning.Some have an ear for music.Some are artists.Some swim.Some know buttons.Some know Shakespeare.Some are mothers.And some people dance.

This trip to America will be a memoriable experience,and it is partly true.I believe everything we did is to enrich our life.So be whoever we want to be and try to make the best of it.

My vacation

Last summer, I went to Egypt with my family, we have apartment there. First of all, my father doesn’t like cold area because he has a problems in his health. Second reason, Egypt has famous things in the world “ Pyramids”. We visit it every years. Also, we visited river Nile , it has nice color. Last vacation, we changed our plans . We went to small village. we saw grove and animals. We ate the famous food, like bread . In the village , man and woman worked together in horticultures. After one week, we went to Alexandria, it has beautiful beach. We took a boat in the morning, the sea looks so cool. We tried to fishing , but we failed. Port said and Alexandria both have beautiful beach. Than, we went Cairo, big city in Egypt. We still in hotel because it’s far around 4 hours from Alexandria. We went university street and mall. My sister and me love shopping. We spent a long time there. The people are friendly and helpful. Finally, we spent a wonderful time in Egypt . We never forget this vacation.

My Family in Riverside

I'm living in Valencia Hill, Riverside where is near the Goodwind's (Organic food store) and UCR main campus. I'm renting one of the room in the house. There are 5 people (include of me) and 2 dogs in my home. John & Judy who are couple, also they are my lenders. They are always kind to me. John always says "hello, how are you?" to me. Judy is from Minnesota. Judy likes talking, so she always talks me a lot of things. I like her Minnesota accent. Minnesota accent sounds cute to me. It's really helps me to improve my English skills. Jeff who is son of my lender, he is visiting from Minnesota. Because, it's snowing in Minnesota now. So he is going to come back when Minnesota's weather is getting better. He is good at house maintenance and barbecue. His barbecue is really delicious! Jonathan who is my boyfriend, he's been living in here. This is because I'm living in here, too. He is from Virginia. He is a graduate student of UCR. His major is physics. He is also kind. He tells me a lot of American culture. Jack & Nanny are really good dogs. Jack is some kind of collie (bigger dog). He is a good guard dog. He only bark to stranger who are he never seen before and post officers. Nanny is some kind of poodle (smaller dog). She is cute and sweet dog. She always quiet. Nobody has seen that Nanny's barking. So we always make fun of dogs that Nanny is a sheep and Jack is a sheepdog. I'm really enjoy living in here, and I'm learning many things :)

My Internet Service Provider

Three weeks ago, I arrived to Riverside and start arranging my stuff. Unfortunately, the apartment where I live is not supported with the Internet Service. So, I started looking for internet providers and apply for the service. I chose AT & T company to be my internet provider, I went to the store to check out for their plans, and filled the application with the whole information needed, and finally I paid the fees for this subscription. After I paid, the store representative gave me an activation date for the service which was on the 1st of April, so I left the store thinking how much smooth the application was processed and finalized, since I am going to wait only for 3 days.

The next day I found a lot of missed calls in my cell phone!! and that was AT & T store they were trying to tell me that my application had been cancelled with no any reason, so they request me to come over to the store and reapply again. Anyways, I reapplied again for the service and they gave me another activation date to be on the 7th of April, I didn't accept that because that was their fault and they have to give me sooner date, the representative tried his best to make it on the 4th, well .. that satisfied me.

The fourth day arrived and the service wasn't working, I assumed it would work on the 7th, but unfortunately even the 7th wasn't a helpful day. I went again to the store to find out what is going on!! I met the same guy the one who arranged my application and I explained to him my problem. After long discussion and much of apologies from him, he told to me the problem wasn't from his side and he gave me another activation date to be on the 11th, thus I left the store with madness feelings.

On the 11th day, was it working? actually it wasn't. At that moment, I started to search for another internet provider because that was really too much and I fed up. Unfortunately, AT & T as far as I know was the only provider for the place that I live in. So, I have to deal with it and try to fix it by any means.

I went to the store and I asked them that I need to complain against this mess, and try to find out where the problem is and fix it. After three more days, their higher management response to my complain and assured to me that the whole mess was cased by their system since they could not find my address but eventually they could fix it.

I think what happened with AT & T gave me a good lesson in patience especially if there are no choices and options.

Time Management

I believe that every student has faced with a problem how to affectively organize his or her time table. Because, nowadays, we have a lot of things and activities which usually help to waste time in the wrong way…I always call this things “time killers”. They may include reading harmful information about unnecessary subjects, spending a lot of time in World Web which is called Internet, cheating with friends through Facebook and other portals and even listening music…The solution of this big problem is obvious! You just need to grow the ability how to make the maximum use of your time. You can lean on the following 4 bullet points:

1) Define what you want – set aims.

Since you can’t change time itself, you need to change how you work with time. This can be done by making small personal goals to start with, gradually moving to larger goals as you progress in your time management skills.

2) Do what you need to – create a plan.

Write some the most main plans which you want to realize, and just attempt to do it in the correct way. The best advantage of creating plan is you already know what you need to do and without paying attention you just automatically try to get it.

3) Learn about yourself – where are you losing time

Observe what you usually do during all day…then take notes of every day during one week. And at the end of the week look at areas that took up your time. This kind of observation really helps to control your time.

4) Don’t dawdle – set time limits

Set time limits almost everywhere where you can measure it. If you need just one hour for checking your e-mail, don’t let yourself to neglect favor of time frames.


I hope that this short pieces of advises will help you to correctly use you time, and you will not waste your time on useless things….You must always appreciate your time, and don’t regret that you didn’t do some couple things before…((

The people in the world realy like to watch many kind of sports events. when people watch the game and cheer a likely team to win the big match,
we will be happy a all day.Because winning team, which is my likely team, offers to me a satisfaction. So i want to introduce a one event belong to the most famous derby in soccer. It's a El clasico.

It's really famous event for people who are interest in to watch soccer games in Spain,England and italy leagues. IN this event become two teams in soccer stadium.The one of two teams is Real Madrid and the other team is FC Barcelona. IN fact, i think i don't need to explain about these teams. because these are also belong to the best soccer teams like A.C millan, INTER millan, M.U , Arsnal and so on.

That the one team is Real Madrid was founded in 1900. In La Liga that is the laegue in Spain, the team have gotten the winner 31 times,and this team have also gotten winner 17 times in Copa del Rey that is a tournament in Spain soccer teams.In addition,this team have gotten 9 time winner in the most big tournament in EURO that is called UEFA Champions League.It mean that Real Mardrid has good honours and a long history. and the other team is FC Barcelona also have won the many kind of competitions and tournaments as Real Mardrid. FC barcelona have won in the
La Liga 25 times ,in the Copa del rey 9 times and in the UEFA Champions League 3 times.Also Real mardrid and FC barcelona have superstar players. these superstar are Messi in Barcelona and Ronaldo in Real mardrid. Both have a big salary and the best skill of soccer.

End of the story, why do i write a El casico derby? because it is big event, but resently these team was set a plan to get serial match in different competitions as Copa del rey final, Champions League and La Liga league. but one of four El clasico games was already finish on April 16,and this score is 1 VS 1. Next El clasico derby will start on april 20 about the winner of copa del ray, and the other matchs plan to start on
april 27 and may 3 about the Champions league in semi final. Lately many soccer fans in the world expect these fantastic match about which team is winner in this classical serial matches. So I and many Soccer fans
are waiting the matches and they are expecting what to show about these matches like fantactic goals, soccer skills and end of the socore.

World Series of Boxing presents LA and Astana!!

Sunday was very exciting and really long day. I went to Los-Angeles with my friends. On Saturday we decided to go after lunch, but our adult friends made some corrections because they haven’t ever been to LA. According to this, they picked me up at 12 o’clock. So, it was sounded to be great. We went to Hollywood Boulevard for enjoy stars of famous people and take photos as many as possible. Actually, it was not just optional trip, and we came there on purpose. The aim was to see the World Series of Boxing. It is a team competition between two groups of boxers which present their own countries. In this way, the box was between American team and team from Kazakhstan. The American teams’ name is Matadors, and they have their own red blue flag. The Kazakhstan teams’ name is Astana Arlans which means wolfs of capital city. Each team composed of five the strongest and bravest boxers. Some of them are Olympic champions, and others are gold and silver owners. The structure of competition was usual because all boxers were divided into pairs according to their weights. The box started at 7 pm, and it took place at Music Box Center on the Hollywood Boulevard. There were a lot of Kazakh students who came from different cities such as San Diego, San Francisco and we who are from Riverside. Also, there were students from USC University. When we came in to hall, we saw a big ring which has red and blue corners. I had never seen real boxing before; I just saw it at movies. During the competition we were sitting on the balcony, and we could completely see all occurred actions. The first play started at 7.30 pm, and it was consisted of five rounds. Every round was lasting for 3 minutes. The tables of rounds were shown by beautiful girls. My friend whose name is Mamyrhan brought a big flag of our country, and some guys drawn a placard with inscription “Kazakhstan alga” which means Kazakhstan ahead!!! Moreover, we were a unanimous team of fans! The students with loud voices were shouting during the box competition, and I hope that their words supported our team. In the break time we tried to restore our voices, and also we took a lot of pictures!!! It was really fan, and I began to feel a pride of my home country! Finally, our team became the winners with score 3:2! The final decisive point was taken by international boxer who played inside of the team of Kazakhstan. All American fans were disappointed by failure; in contrast, the fans of Kazakhstan were very happy and proud!!! I really liked this day!!!=)

Turki's Life

I would like to introduce myself for everybody, my name is Turki and I am from Saudi Arabia. In general, my counrty has a desert enviornment and weather, so there are alot of sands, the weather is hot most of the year especially if we are talking about the western region, that place that I belong to.

Anyways, I grow up in a city called "Jeddah", it is a coastal city and has humid and hot wheather as I mentioned above, it comes after the capital city "Ryiadh" in population and area. However, I completed my education there, my academic major was the Mechanical Engineering and in specific words it is called " Mechanical Thermal Engineering and Desalination Technology".

Afterthat, I could join to the Royal Commission at Yanbu Industrial City, and started my work experience there. Actually, I liked my major at the studying time, but when I joined to the working field and realized the options and the chances for my certificate, I felt as not really satisfied and excited while I am working. So, I tried to find a way to satisfy my ambition, and actually I could do it. One day my manager asked if any one would like to change his position from being purely Technical Job into a position which is more related to the Project Management and actually it was newly opened at that time. Nevertheless, a quick decision I made and I asked him to transfer me to the new department.

Nowadays, I am planning to study my master degree in either Project Management or Engineering Management, and try to have as much as I can of certificates that may support and enhance me in the new engineering field. After that, going back home hopefully with all of my certificates and the exciting to have a really big position.

For the time being, all my life has changed due to the travel to the States. Actually, till the moment I am working on arranging my life here and try to make it settled. In fact, I have alot of things to do in these days; studying, helping my wife in her study, watch my little baby and play with him and arrange my life here more and more.

At the end, I hope these few lines can give an idea for the reader and summerized my life story for him.

Hello my new classmates~ I am JO. All of my friends in america, they are called me JO!. In fact, my real first name is Kyoung man. but i think that the my first name is difficult to read or to write.

I think, everybody know that I am korean and my hometown is Seoul that is the capital of korea. maybe if you meet a korean, one of quater korean live in Seoul. And my hometown is called wol Gye 3don No Won gu. In this place has one feature.It's to be many apartments! these apartments have many flour above 20.For example, my apartment has 28 flour.

Nowadays, I'm 24 age.It's mean that i was born in 1986.But I still study in university in korea about my major it's management.Forthermore, now i study english in Riverside because i'm realy weak about all of English skills like speeking,writing and so on. Anyway after i finish this semester i will go bact to korea and i will prepart to get a some licences about relating my major. I want to be a financial manager.

My free time activities are watching baseball game, work out,sing a song and playing computer game. So now i always work out in recreation centar.
But now i can't maintain all my activities. some of my hobbies can be tried in korea for example sing a song and playing game.

I am from Daejeon in South Korea. Daejeon is one of the big cities in Korea and it is located in middle of South Korea.
I like Riverside,but I miss Korea!!

I am university student. This is my university picture. It is called CNU. CNU is also located in Daejeon. My major is Electric engineering. It is difficult, but I am interested in my major. Now, I am exchange student. I'm studying English and my major.
When I go back to my country, I will be senior. I will graduate one year later. I will try to get a job after I go back to Korea. I want to enter big global company like a Samsung and LG. That's because I should study hard.
In my free time, I like to go shopping with my mother and friends.
I often went shopping with my mother on weekends, but after I came to Riverside, I go shopping with my friends.
However, when I feel tired, I like to listen to music. I like almost all kinds of music, especially Korean music.

Because, Hiroshima is more nice weather (Sunny days), and big city. My home town is humid and more rainy days, and small town. I'd been in Hiroshima while I was courage student. I just graduate courage last month. My major was psychology, I was in cognitive psychology lob. My specialty was neur-psychology. It research about brain. United stats is more famous and popular doing research about neur-psychology than Japan. So I want to study neuro psychology in the U.S. graduate school in the future.

As you guys know, I'm from Korea.

I live in Seoul that is Capital of Korea.

Seoul is very beautiful and historical city. It have been capital of Korea more than 600 years.

Even korea is very small country but Seoul is big city.

Population of Korea is only 45million and 10million people lives in Seoul.

It Surrouded by mountains and Han river flows middle of it.

Every month there are variety festival. My favorite one is firework festival which be held every october in Han riverside.




I'm university student now and I'm senior. Now I'm planning to graduate next year in summer.

My major is Fire Prevention Engineering. It's very specific. I study mixed things. For example, my class contain chemistry, architecture, phisics, electric, contructural law and so on.

After graduate I want to go graduate scholl in US but I'm not sure yet. It depands on funding so I really hope that I can be RA or get scholarship.





My hobby is backpacking travel. I'd been more than 10 countries and i'm plannig to travel 30 countries bofore I'll be 30 years old.

Eapesially I'm very curious about Africa, South America and Middle East. Actually I went to 5 countries of South America last winter. So about next year, I'll go to Africa or Middle East.


One more hobby is sports. Even thought I'm not early bird but I love doing sports. I think I love something new. I do wind surfing, wind surfing, ski, tennis, badminton, cycling.

Espesially I love cycling. I love surfing also but for doing surfing I can't do anytime. However I can ride bicycle whenever I want so I love it. Especially when I traveld Bolivia I ride mountain bicycle where it called Death Road. It was cool experience. Everytime I miss that time.

My name is Gabi Kim.
I'm from South Korea. And my hometown is Daejeon. This city is one of the biggest city in Korea. Actually, my hometown is another city, but my university is in Daejeon. So I have a lot of good memory with my close friends in Daejeon. Moreover, citizen in Daejeon is very kind and sweet to me. Therefore, It's my hometown in my mind. Hello everybody!!! My name is Diana,and I'm from Kazakhstan which is located in the middle of Asia and Europe.I were living with my family in Astana city. Astana is a new and young calital city of my home counrty.It is just 12 years old;however,it is high modern and well developed city,and also Astana is economic and social center of Kazakhstan. There are a lot of modern highscrapers and buildings especially for business,but there are enough symbols such as museums and old parks which represent the histiry our contry and our traditions.Our president said Astana is a heart of our Republic.I really like my homecity because it's small and beautiful.You may visit Kazakhstan, and I hope you will like it!!
My academic backgraund is not as various as I wanted...because I'm 18, and I just had graduated high school in my counrty. My school is not as usual schools in my country because it's Kazakh-Turkish high school. However, there are two typer of schools:just for girls and separetely for boys.Almost every city has both types of high schools,and there are 28 schools in the country.In the and of this year I'm plannig to give the applications to US universities! My major is Computer Science.And now I'm just improving my English skills and aslo prepering for TOEFL and SAT tests.
In free time I usually watch movies and read books.I like spend time with my friends and have fun.I always think that free time must brings some benefit;however,sometimes I can't choice what activity is better...Aslo I like sport!!

A Bulgarian Girl in Riverside, California

Hello everybody. I would like to introduce myself. My name is Miglena. I am from Bulgaria.

Bulgaria is a small country in Southeast Europe. My country is a neighbor with five other countries. On south its borders with Greece and Turkey, on west with Republic of Macedonia and Serbia, with Romania to the north and Black Sea to the east.In addition, every summer I have a month vacation in different cities on the Black Sea. I love that place very much.

In Bulgaria I live in Sofia- the capital of Bulgaria. Sofia is the biggest city in my country.There are live about two million people, now a days.Also, the town is one of the oldest cities in the country.Therefore, when you visit that place, you will have a chance to see many old and beautiful churches, historical museums,buildings and others. In Sofia are situated the most important institutions and universities.It is also a place for a lot of theatricals, concerts, exhibitions, sport and cultural events.Moreover, around the city there is a big mountain.So, the people who live in the city receive fresh air every morning. Also, during the all year seasons you can visit this mountain and to enjoy to the wonderful nature and some unique plantations and trees.

I graduated university last year. My major is Political sciences. Now I will be boring telling you my future plans. I am sure that everybody knows what are my future plans, because it is too obvious. The most of the people who study in English language program at University of California, Riverside has a plan to continue their education; for example, somebody wants to study Bachelor, Master or Phd degree.If you were wondering what is my future plans, right now you know it. My plans are, first to improve my English skills and second to apply for Master degree program in U.S.A.

In my free time I prefer to do something interesting. I like to go out with my friends, to watch historical movies or some new movies in the cinema or to travel. When I travel I get inspiration for my current and future plans and I have a chance to understand something more for various cities, cultures and people. I love traveling.

In conclusion,I am happy that I have so nice and wonderful classmates and a writing teacher.I hope everybody will enjoy writing and posting in our amazing blog.I wish good luck to everyone.

Introduce myself - Hiep Luong

Hi everybody

My name is Hiep and I come from Vietnam. This is a peaceful country in Asian where border with China, Cambodia and Laos. My hometown is a small city in the middle of my country. My city has a long beach, but it's hot all the year round. I graduated in 2008, my major is Computer Networking. After that, I applied to a integration systems company as a network engineer. In 2010, my uncle give me an advice that I should study oversea because I was young. I thought that was good idea. I would have opportunities improve my english, cope with new challenges and experience a new life. Then, I stopped my work to prepare my plan.

After I finish my english program at UCR extension, I am going to transfer to RCC and study about Computer Information. Then, I will transfer back to UCR for final two years. I have a passion in Computer, so my favorite activity is work with my computer. Besides, I like to play soccer so much.

My hometown is in Qingdao,China.Qingdao is a very beautiful city which is almost arounded by the sea.We often say "green plants, rad housetops,and blue sea" to describe the city Qingdao.Do you know the 2008 Olympic Games?Many competitions were hold there.So you propaply know the generaous idea of my hometown.I like the seafood very much and I can have a lot of them everyday.I also like the smell of the sea.It can help people relax.

Talking about my academic background,I am a junior in Qingdao Technologoical University majoring in Water supply and Drainage Engineering.It is similar to Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering in America.Because I am about to greduate in less than two years,I have to apply the master degree in Canada.My mother and I like Canada,that is partly the reason I want to study there.In this case,I came here to improve my English to prepare the application.

I am the only Child in my family as in most of the families in China,so I do not have a lot of chances to play with peers.Right now when I am free,I like to watch films,and I also like to search the internet at home.
